About the Hunter Valley

Vines in the Hunter Valley’s fertile soils produce some of the world’s best wines. Australia’s oldest wine region, two hours’ drive from Sydney, is particularly known for its acclaimed semillon, family owned wineries and innovative young winemakers.

The Hunter Valley is one of the most popular destinations for visitors outside Sydney and there’s a range of accommodation choices to suit your budget. You’ll discover plenty of things to do, from winery tours and festivals, to farmers markets and dining at quality restaurants.

With more cellar doors than any other wine region in Australia, there are plenty of tour options. Guided tours depart Sydney and will also pick you up from your accommodation in the valley. You can also visit the wineries directly and learn more about wine at the Hunter Valley Wine School or Wine Theatre.

Broken Back Range forms an impressive backdrop to this most picturesque of Australian wine regions. Rent a bicycle, or hop on a motorcycle with Wild Ride Australia, to visit the wineries. For bird’s-eye views, float above the vineyards with Balloon Aloft.

Golf in the vineyards is another popular activity. Tee off at the Greg Norman-designed championship course at The Vintage. The Hunter Valley Wine and Food Festival in May and June celebrates the region’s delicious wines and fresh produce, including fruit, cheese, olive oil, chocolate and beef.
